Motorcraft Encourages Race Fans to Vote for Bill Elliott and the No. 21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup All-Star Race Fan Vote

DEARBORN, Mich., April 30, 2009 – Bill Elliott has already been selected as a Motorsports Hall of Fame driver.

Now Motorcraft, sponsor of his No. 21 Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, wants fans to select him to be a 2009 All-Star.

Elliott, the 1988 NASCAR Champion and 16-time fan-voted Most Popular Driver, will attempt to race his Motorcraft Ford Fusion into the NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star Race on Saturday, May 16.

But since Elliott and the Wood Brothers finished in the top-50 in owner points in 2008, not only is Elliott eligible to race in the Sprint Showdown qualifying race that Saturday afternoon, but he also can contend for the fan-voted position in the All-Star race that evening.

To help ensure Elliott secures a spot, Motorcraft asks race fans to vote for Bill at www.nascar.com/promos/allstar/

Motorcraft is the primary sponsor on the Wood Brothers No. 21 NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford Fusion for nine races this season, which began in February at the Daytona 500 and will culminate with the season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“We really enjoy working with Bill and the Wood Brothers,” said Bob Benintende, Motorcraft National Marketing Manager. “Bill’s career accomplishments have already earned him a spot in the Motorsport Hall of Fame, and he certainly has All-Star credentials. We encourage all race fans to vote for Bill in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race fan vote.”

Fan voting is underway and fans will decide which driver will race as fan choice in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

The Wood Brothers are acknowledged pioneers in the sport of stock-car racing, and have earned 96 wins in over 50 years of NASCAR competition – second most in Ford Racing history.

The red and black Motorcraft logo appears on the No. 21 Ford Fusion in NASCAR, while two Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD) brands - Motorcraft and Quick Lane - adorn the Shelby Mustang Nitro Funny Car of Bob Tasca III, winner of the 2009 Gainesville Gatornationals.

FCSD and its associated brands have won a place in the hearts and minds of racing fans everywhere since the mid-1980s, including sponsoring Ford Hall-of-Fame drag racer Bob Glidden, a 10-time NHRA Pro Stock champion, and NASCAR champions Bill Elliott and Dale Jarrett.

Motorcraft is a longtime team sponsor in NASCAR’s premier series. Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD) backed cars have recorded 33 wins and a pair of championships since Motorcraft first appeared on the Ford Thunderbirds of Bud Moore in 1985. In 1988, Motorcraft teamed up with Coors as an associate sponsor on Bill Elliott’s championship-winning Thunderbird.

TASCA AND MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE SHELBY MUSTANG TEAM
SEE ST. LOUIS AS A GATEWAY TO VICTORY

Bob Tasca III used his off race week to reflect on past success of Gainesville, focus on the future, and get ready for the remainder of the season. A trip home to Motorcraft and Quick Lane headquarters refreshed the second year driver.

Dearborn Homecoming. Tasca fulfilled his goal set in November 2007, win a Wally and bring it home to Dearborn, MI. Tasca completed the first part of the promise in Gainesville and last week he delivered on the second part by visiting the sponsors’ headquarters. Tasca recognized the loyal sponsorship of Motorcraft and Quick Lane since the program launched nearly two years ago and presented Ford Customer Service Division with a Wally commemorating his first career win in Gainesville.

“I was privileged and honored to visit Dearborn and give back to all the people that believed and invested in our program,” said Tasca. “Our foundation is ‘Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday’ and we’ve accomplished the win on Sunday, so now we got to keep going. I’m certain that there’s more wins in our future but the first is one of the sweetest and to give them the trophy and have Ford put it up in their case is a very rewarding experience.”

Wilkerson’s Home. In order to bring another trophy back home to Dearborn, Tasca seeks to return to his Gainesville form this weekend at Gateway International Raceway, the home race track of technical alliance teammate Tim Wilkerson.

“Tim considers Gateway International Raceway his home track and is the defending race winner, so I know he’s got a lot of fans and friends coming out to that track,” said Tasca. “We’re still learning about our Shelby Mustangs, but we think St. Louis is as good a place as any to get a few rounds under our belt. We had one of our quickest runs ever in St. Louis last year. When the weather conditions are right, and they look like they’re going to be right, temperature-wise, it will be a fast race track.”

Tasca and Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang Team Get Bumped in First Round in Atlanta

TASCA AND MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE SHELBY MUSTANG TEAM GET BUMPED IN FIRST ROUND IN ATLANTA

Atlanta, Georgia – April 19, 2009 – Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang team were hoping to bring home another win to commemorate the Mustang’s 45th Anniversary this weekend. Those plans were foiled with a first round loss to Tim Wilkerson.

Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team attacked the Atlanta Dragway on Friday only to have runs that were too aggressive and left them out of the top-12 locked-in qualifying positions.

“Our goal was to qualify in the top half of the field in order to have lane choice. We knew the left lane was pretty difficult to navigate,” said Tasca on his qualifying effort. “We knew that if we weren’t in the top half, we were going to have our hands full.”

On Saturday, Tasca and the team posted two conservative runs and their best time of the weekend, a 4.148 second run at 297.81 miles per hour. The final effort on Saturday placed Tasca and his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang in the 11th qualifying position heading into Sunday’s race.

“We were behind on Friday because we were trying put up some big numbers and we were just too aggressive. Saturday we had to go conservative and get qualified hoping that last run on Saturday would put us in the top half of the field because we really wanted to be in the right lane.”

During Sunday’s eliminations, Tasca faced technical alliance partner Tim Wilkerson. Tasca lost to Wilkerson in the first round of competition.

“We knew Wilkerson was going to run good because we share data,” said Tasca. “We knew what he was trying to run. We were trying to run the same as him but we were trying to do it in two different places because we knew we had that bump to contend with in the middle of the track. Unfortunately, out Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang hit the bump, we made it through that area and it got really out of control near the finish line. We had the tires spinning really hard and it was moving around. It was the most I ever drove a car at the top end of the track.”

Despite having the third consecutive first round loss this season, Tasca remains positive and plans to learn from Atlanta.

“You learn something every time you start the car,” said Tasca. “Our Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang tells us what it wants and what it likes. You have to take the good and leave the bad behind. It just didn’t go our way this weekend. You don’t like coming to a race track where lane choice makes that much of a difference and at this race track it makes a huge difference. We’re still early in the season and there is more racing to come. We’ve just got to keep moving forward and turn it around in St. Louis.”

Jack Beckman defeated Ashley Force Hood in the final round to win the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals.

TASCA AND MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE SHELBY MUSTANG TEAM EAGER TO REVIVE ATLANTA SUCCESS

In a city rich with history, Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang team look to channel results from last year’s Atlanta race, plus one round.

One year ago, in his sixth career Funny Car race, Bob Tasca III in his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang reached the semi-final round for the first time. After two difficult weeks in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Tasca looks forward to returning to a track where he’s seen success.

“We have a team and a Shelby Mustang that has shown strength this year and we’re just looking to get back to racing,” said Tasca. “Atlanta is a great track that has been good to me over the last couple of years. We’re going to get some rounds under our belt in Atlanta and see if we can walk away with the trophy. The level of determination, focus and confidence of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team has been phenomenal this year especially after the great week in Gainesville, and then we had two tough races in Houston and Las Vegas.”

Just Peachy. Tasca looks at the season in two parts, pre-Countdown and the final 10 races. At the beginning of the season, Tasca set the goal to remain a fixture in the top-10 points standings. Despite two difficult weeks on the track, Tasca is satisfied with his sixth place position in the point standings.

“We’re very early into the season but I love where we’re sitting right now,” said Tasca. “We’re a round and a half out of second place. Seven of the top eight cars are within two rounds of second place and that just shows how competitive everyone is this early in the season. Just like you need to qualify to win on Sunday, you need to be in the top-10 to run for the championship. That’s what our goal is at this point of the season – to get into the top-10.”

Mustang’s 45th Anniversary. On April 17, 1964, the Ford Mustang made its debut at the New York World’s Fair. This weekend Tasca will run a special 45th Anniversary Mustang decal on his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang to commemorate this significant milestone for the pony car.

“When I was 16 years old, my first car was a brand new 1992 Mustang GT coupe with a white leather interior and we made a bunch of modifications to it,” recalled Tasca. “That’s probably my favorite street Mustang. It was the first car I had in my garage, the first car I took down a drag strip. Mustang is iconic; it is part of the DNA of America. It has withstood the test of time and the ups and downs of economies. It’s just an iconic brand; it’s like baseball to a certain extent. It’s classic.”

Parachute Malfunction Prevents Tasca from Going Rounds in Las Vegas

PARACHUTE MALFUNCTION BRINGS ENDS LAS VEGAS RACE FOR TASCA AND THE MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE SHELBY MUSTANG

Las Vegas, Nevada – April 5, 2009 – Tasca’s day ended just 300 feet into Sunday’s first round eliminations when the left parachute malfunctioned on the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang Funny Car.

On Sunday morning, Tasca rolled to the line and faced defending series champion Cruz Pedregon. At the 300-foot marker, Tasca felt his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang struggle to accelerate.

“I knew something didn’t feel right because the run started good and then the Mustang was struggling,” said Tasca. “I didn’t know the parachute was out, but I knew something was wrong.”

Tasca continued to explain the parachute problem, “The parachute malfunctioned because the pin wasn’t secure. We holeshotted Cruz during that run and we were going to beat him. This has never happened to me in my two years of Top Alcohol and the year and a half of Funny Car competition. It just wasn’t in the cards for us here in Vegas.”

As a pre-run routine, Tasca walks around his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang, “I always look at the parachutes before I get in and everything was fine. On the burnout there was a little vibration, but nothing that I would even think twice about. There must have been enough of a vibration or shake that pulled the cable back,” said a disappointed Tasca. “The Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang was on a great run. The g-forces started to come into play and didn’t have enough to keep the parachute in the pack.”

“What makes it worse is that crew chief Chris Cunningham and I went back, looked at the data and realized that we probably would have won that round,” explained Tasca. “That’s what makes this loss that much more painful. We’ll conquer Atlanta. We’ve got to look forward and not behind us. We’re still in the running to be in the top 10. We win as a team and lose as a team, but that’s a tough way to lose. We really beat ourselves this weekend.”

Ron Capps defeated Rookie of the Year candidate Matt Hagan during Sunday’s final elimination. This was the third win for Capps this season; Capps remains the Funny Car point leader. Tasca drops to sixth in Funny Car standings.
