TASCA AND MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE RACING LOOK “FOUR-WARD” TO FOUR-WIDE RACING THIS WEEKEND IN CHARLOTTE

DEARBORN, MI – March 23, 2010 – For Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing team, this weekend’s race at zMAX Dragway marks the first of several homecomings for the team.

Concord, North Carolina, is home to Tasca Racing, the first Funny Car race shop in the heart of NASCAR country and located minutes from zMAX Dragway. All crew members live in Charlotte and are eager to race not only at their home track, but to make history as event champions of this weekend’s Inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.

“I’m excited to get to the track for the four-wide racing because this is the first time it’s ever been done,” said Tasca. “Whenever you can be a part of history, whether you’re a fan, a spectator, a driver or a crewmember, I think there’s a lot of nostalgic value about it. This weekend will go down in the history books as a significant moment in NHRA competition.”

A resident of Hope, Rhode Island, Tasca has logged many hours in the race shop and embraces the Charlotte community. Determined to make his second home proud, Tasca looks to check “Win Charlotte” off his drag racing to-do list.

“Last year we finished building our Tasca Racing shop, so I’ve spent a lot more time in Concord,” said Tasca. “On top of Charlotte being one of our team’s home track, it is one of the premier facilities for NHRA. You want to win no matter where you race, but I want to win at Charlotte, especially since it is in our backyard. That’s my goal looking this weekend – win the four-wide race at Charlotte.”

Although the racing format is changed for this weekend, Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing team will take to the track and attack each round one run at a time.

“The only thing that will be different for this weekend is staging,” said Tasca. “Once the stage bulb is on and the amber flashes, you could have ten cars running next to you, and it wouldn’t make a difference. I’m so focused on my lane, driving my Mustang and making the proper inputs to get the car from A to B. To me, it doesn’t matter how many people are racing next to you. Other than getting over the first staging process, which we’ll get done on Friday, I don’t think it will make much of a difference at all.”

Now in his third season of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing competition, Tasca has shown significant improvement since his 2008 rookie season. After three races this season, Tasca has reached the semi-final round twice and has one runner-up finish.

“We know that our Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing team has more round wins in us, more wins in us, and more performance in us when the time comes at the end of this year to run for this championship,” continued Tasca. “The best is yet to come, and I really believe that’s the case. But it’s early; it’s early in the season. We’re going to go through highs and lows. It’s just being able to manage and fight your way through day-to-day, weekend-to-weekend and hopefully putting our team in the position to win.”

In addition to Tasca’s quick start to the season, he has helped build a mini streak for Ford Racing where a Ford Mustang has been in the finals of each Funny Car race this season, winning twice.

“We always like to see our Ford Shelby Mustang in the finals or winner’s circle,” said Tasca. “To see how the Ford teams are performing on the track, it’s really a tribute to the crews, to the crew chiefs and all of the hard work that they’ve put in because the level of competition is unbelievably fierce. Every car out there is capable of winning the race. It just goes to show the presence that we have both on and off the race track. It’s pretty cool to be driving a Ford in NHRA.”

BOB TASCA III AND MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE RACING REACH FINALS; FINISH WEEKEND AS GATORNATIONALS RUNNER-UP

Gainesville, FL., March 15, 2010 – Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang team hoped to have their first back-to-back Gatornationals victory on Sunday, but a dropped cylinder in the finals prevented the team from celebrating for the second consecutive year.

Tasca faced technical alliance teammate Tim Wilkerson in an all-Ford final on Sunday afternoon. As a result of the dropped cylinder Tasca’s run to the finish line of 4.192 seconds at 287.17 miles per hour was second best compared to Wilkerson’s 4.097-second pass at 303.78 miles per hour.

“As defending race champ, our expectations were high and we came out looking to repeat our win from last year,” said Tasca. “Our Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang ran great and did what we wanted it to do, other than in the final round. Running in the finals against Tim was great. Wilkerson has a tremendous group working for him and I’m happy for them.”

It was a weekend of progressive improvement for Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing team. The weekend got off to a slow start when rain showers canceled one of the qualifying sessions on Friday. During his first run late on Friday, Tasca shook the tires and posted a time of 8.455 seconds at 77.18 miles per hour, which put the team in the 15th qualifying position.

Determined to make the top half of the field, Tasca, crew chiefs Chris Cunningham and Marc Denner and the entire Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing team went to work on Saturday to post two solid qualifying runs. With ideal weather conditions, Tasca showed his power in the second qualifying session by running a 4.138-second pass at 306.33 miles per hour. Tasca was third quickest of the session and moved from 15th to eighth in the qualifying order.

“The decisions that have to be made to make these Funny Cars go down the race track and compete for a championship is absolutely amazing,” said Tasca. “Chris and Marc did a tremendous job on Saturday and worked hard to get everything right for us to strong and race ready on Sunday.”

For the final qualifying run, Tasca improved again with a 4.107-second pass at 306.81 miles per hour. That final pass seeded Tasca in the seventh position for Sunday’s elimination rounds where he would face Phoenix race winner Jack Beckman.

Tasca defeated Jack Beckman, Robert Hight and Ron Capps before racing Tim Wilkerson in the finals. During his semi-final run against Capps, the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang was a handful for Tasca.

“That semi-final run was a wild ride,” said Tasca. “We had the front wheels off the ground and the clutch locked up, but we were able to beat Capps to the line.”

Today marked the first time Tasca and Wilkerson raced each other in the finals. Tasca defeated Wilkerson during the second round of Gainesville in 2009 en rout to his victory. Tasca was looking to repeat that performance, but a dropped cylinder prevented the Rhode Island native from crossing the finish line first.

“We put a cylinder out in the finals against Wilkerson,” said Tasca. “In Nitro Funny Car racing, dropping a cylinder is one of the gremlins that you face. I knew it was out because my Mustang was almost in the wall. I had the steering wheel turned all the way to the right and I just hung on to keep it straight.”

With just three races of the 2010 season under their belts, Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing team have reached the semi-finals twice and the final round once. Tasca has qualified in the top-eight for two races this season.

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series returns to the track on March 26 at zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC, for the Inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.

TASCA AND MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE SEEK TO DEFEND NO. 1 PERFORMANCE IN GAINESVILLE

DEARBORN, MI – March 9, 2010 – One year ago, Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang were confident heading into the Gainesville. That confidence, hard work and consistent performance enabled them to leave Gatornationals with their first No. 1 Qualifying position, but they also left with something a little more important – their first career win.

“From breaking the Alcohol Funny Car record to my first Funny Car win – Gainesville is hands-down my favorite track and an incredible place to race,” said Tasca. “We’re so fortunate not only to get our first win, but our first No. 1 Qualifier at such a special venue. As a defending race winner, it adds that much more excitement for everyone on the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing Team.”

Although looking to repeat their success, Tasca and the team look at Gainesville as a familiar track and have set realistic expectations for the race weekend. Tasca and the team remain focused on the task at hand and with the proper tuning; there will be a similar end result.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to Gainesville because we’ve done very well there,” said Tasca. “We made a lot of changes to our Shelby Mustang during the off-season, but we have a very similar combination this weekend to what we ran a year ago. We are confident about our chances this weekend. This Mustang is the most competitive race car I’ve driven. I’m looking forward to that opening session on Friday.”

Tasca’s confidence in racing at Gainesville stems from the years of experience crew chiefs Chris Cunningham and Marc Denner bring to the track. Cunningham and Denner have more than 35 years of experience between them and they arm Tasca with the quickest Mustang possible.

“Chris Cunningham and Marc Denner will prep our Mustang to the best tune-up for the conditions at hand,” said Tasca. “The crew chiefs make their decisions on what they feel the track can hold. I have a lot of confidence in Chris, Marc and my crew. I know they want to repeat our performance from last year and I think we can bring home another win.”

Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing Experience
The Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing Experience interactive consumer display returns to Nitro Alley in Gainesville. Fans can enter to win prizes and participate in the Motorcraft Holeshot Challenge and Quick Lane Challenge. A myriad of activities are planned for fans during the weekend, including Q & A and autograph appearances at the display by Ford Funny Car drivers on Friday and Saturday.

“Another reason I’m excited for Gainesville is that our Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing Experience is going to be in Nitro Alley,” said Tasca. “The display is a great place for NHRA fans to go in between rounds. It adds so much value to the midway. I know I’ll be by throughout the weekend, experience some cool activities, and win some prizes. You also get the chance to meet me for a Q & A session.”

Elliott Gives Hometown Fans Something To Cheer About With Spirited Run In Kobalt Tools 500

Elliott Gives Hometown Fans Something To Cheer About With Spirited Run In Kobalt Tools 500

When a driver and team qualifies 34th in NASCAR’s highly competitive Sprint Cup Series, the smart money says to manage the expectations and seek glory some other day. But when the green flag dropped to start the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, hometown favorite Bill Elliott and the crew of his Wood Brothers No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion came out swinging, with chassis changes by the crew and some determined driving by Elliott, a native of the north Georgia town of Dawsonville.

The David Hyder-led crew used several early pit stops to tune on the car, and they hit on a set-up that allowed Elliott to begin climbing through the field. Just after the 300-mile mark, the team was getting some quality TV time on FOX, and it wasn’t for old-times sake. It was due to hard work on pit road and hustle behind the wheel as Elliott worked his way into the top 15 and even into the lead at Lap 215 before surrendering the top spot to make a pit stop.

The Woods then reached into their bag of tricks and tried to pull one of their proven Atlanta strategies and stretch their fuel mileage late in the race. But numerous late cautions foiled that plan. “We were in position to make one less stop than everybody else, but it didn’t work out,” said team co-owner Len Wood, one of the most respected fuel mileage strategists on pit road.

With the fuel strategy plan no longer an option, the Woods and Elliott returned to a more conventional strategy, one that was good enough to allow them to overcome a lap-losing penalty on a pit stop. At Lap 273 of a scheduled 325, sitting in 29th position, two laps behind the leader, the day appeared to be essentially over for the famed No. 21. The smart money would say it was, but Elliott and the team had other ideas.

Using the wave-around rule and some heads-up driving, Elliott got the car back on the lead lap, even though he was often at a disadvantage, tire-wear wise, to the drivers he was racing. By the time a crash between Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski set up the first of two green-white-checkered flag restarts, Elliott had made his way to 23rd, on the lead lap.

As the lead pack raced through Turns 3 and 4 on the first restart, a multi-car melee began unfolding just ahead of Elliott and his No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion. The ol’ cat behind the wheel showed he still had some pretty quick reflexes, and he steered his way through the smoke and grinding metal to line up 14th for the final restart. But Elliott found himself at a disadvantage to drivers behind him who had fresher tires, a huge advantage on an abrasive track like AMS, and he lost two spots at the end. He crossed the finish line challenging pole-sitter Dale Earnhardt Jr. for a top-15 finish but had to settle for a 16th, his best of the young season. It was his second straight strong effort – and second straight 16th-place run, going back to Homestead last fall - on an intermediate track, the size facility that makes up the bulk of the team’s limited schedule.

“I was tickled to death after what we went through,” Elliott said in the garage Sunday night at AMS, standing in sight of a grandstand that bears his name. “We had a penalty on pit road, and then it was just one thing after another. The car was pretty tight and we fought that…. “It was just one of those days, but it turned out.”

The No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion returns to the track on April 18 for the Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Elliott Qualifies the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion 34th at Atlanta

Elliott Qualifies the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion 34th at Atlanta

Bill Elliott and the crew of the # 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion couldn’t be blamed if they took it easy during Friday night qualifying at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The team had struggled in practice and made lots of changes to the car after practice. The outcome of their qualifying lap on a cold, crisp night was far from predictable.

Then, just before Elliott took his turn on the clock, Bobby Labonte, a former series champion, qualified on time. At that point, Elliott was in the race no matter how he ran because he was then eligible for a past-champion’s provisional starting spot. But the Woods and Elliott came to race, so once Elliott fired up the #21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion, he gave it everything he had.

He found the speed to make the race without having to resort to the provisional, a victory in itself on a potentially disappointing day. To do so, he picked up 6/10 of a second over his best lap in practice, a difference in running 185 miles per hour and 189. It was about the same pick-up that Dale Earnhardt Jr. needed to win the pole for Sunday’s race.

“I don’t think anybody else picked up that much,” said Wood Brothers team co-owner Eddie Wood. “That’s a big credit to [crew chief] David Hyder and the crew and to Bill,” he said. “Bill knew when he left pit road that he was in the show, but he still ran that hard.”

Elliott will start 34th in Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500, but now that the team is in the race, the crew can focus on a more conventional set-up for running 500 miles. “We’ll go back to something close to what we’ve run here before,” Wood said.

After the red # 21 was back in its pit stall and put away for the night, Wood and Hyder went trackside and took in a NASCAR Modified race on the quarter-mile oval on the frontstretch at AMS. It was a welcome respite from a tense, stressful day at the track. Stressful days are something the Woods and Hyder deal with regularly while running a limited schedule without the luxury of a guaranteed starting spot. “It’s like this every week,” Wood said. “It’s no different than Daytona. We were fast at Daytona, but we still had to sweat it out. “Here at Atlanta, we struggled a little bit, but fortunately we were able to get in the race on time and not have to use a provisional.”

As a bonus, the Modified race was a barn-burner, a throwback to the old days of racing at places like Bowman-Gray Stadium, where team founder Glen Wood, Eddie’s father, once ruled the roost. A day that had been filled with anxiety ended with the satisfaction of a gutsy qualifying effort by the 54-year-old Bill Elliott and a door-to-door Modified finish as 19-year-old Corey Lajoie beat veteran Tim Brown in the 150-lap feature.

Now it’s on to Sunday, and a race at a track where the Woods are the all-time win leaders with 12 and where Elliott is the hometown favorite. The Kobalt Tools 500 is set to get the green flag at 1 p.m. with TV coverage on FOX and radio coverage by PRN.
